Path for the new year

31 Dec

It’s that time of year when greetings between friends and among strangers all seem to include a cheerful “Happy New Year.”  After the past year of natural and man-made disaster, political and financial chaos, however, it seems that a more candid greeting would sound more like “Thank goodness 2011 is over. Different New Year!”

2011 leaves behind a trail of amazing questions and challenges that we could hardly imagine at this time last year. Now, it would be easy to tuck away in our own little nests, because the challenges seem so impenetrable, so daunting, so massive relative to small glimmers of resilience. How can we not be discouraged? I found the following quotes about paths forward particularly apropos for these times.

“Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever lengthening, ever ascending, ever improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.” -Winston Churchill

“Adversity is the first path to truth.” -Lord Byron

“Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence.” -Henry David Thoreau

“Walker, there is no path; the path is made by walking.” -Antonio Machado

A Happy Different New Year for all of us!
